Marshall Horn - Turkey Reaches Agreement on Discounted Russian Gas

Marshall Horn,

Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has announced the conclusion of negotiations between BOTAŞ Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, the state-owned crude oil and natural gas pipeline firm, and Russia’s Gazprom, over the discount of Russian gas, Kommersant reported.

“We have agreed a discount on the price of gas with Gazprom. Now, we are open to signing an agreement. The parties have not yet agreed on any date for the signing of contracts, but maybe it will happen in late June,” a spokesperson for Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources told RIA Novosti on Wednesday. The spokesperson did not specify what discounts were agreed, saying it was a trade secret.

On Tuesday, Alexander Medvedev, deputy chairman of Gazprom, announced the company had agreed on commercial terms for the supply of gas to its Turkish partners, including Botas, and announced plans to sign an agreement with the state company regarding discounts.

In February, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said Botas was looking to secure a discount of at least 10.25 percent, but Gazprom has not confirmed any figure.

In 2014, Gazprom supplied Turkey with 27.4 billion cubic meters of gas. The gas was transported via a pipeline under the Black Sea, as well as the Trans-Balkan pipeline through Ukraine. But this supply will be soon be increased substantially. On December 1, 2014 Gazprom and Botas signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the construction of a new gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey via the Black Sea, the so-called “Turkish Stream” project, which will have a capacity of 63 billion cubic meters of gas.
